Milk fatty acid composition of unsupplemented dairy cows grazing on a tropical pasture R. Bras. Zootec.
Dias,Kamila Maciel; Gama,Marco Antônio Sundfeld da; Schmitt,Daniel; Sbrissia,André Fischer.
ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the milk fatty acid (FA) composition of unsupplemented dairy cows grazing on elephantgrass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum. cv. Pioneiro) pastures under three grazing management strategies: pre-grazing height of 120 cm with defoliation intensities of 50 and 70% of the initial height (treatments 120/50 and 120/70) and pre-grazing height of 90 cm with defoliation intensity of 70% (treatment 90/70). Treatments were repeated three times in a complete randomized block design. Tester animals were six multiparous Holsteins cows grouped into pairs according to days in milk and milk yield and allocated to blocks. Individual milk samples were collected after the first and second days of grazing (two-day occupation period) and...

Molecular characterization of elephantgrass accessions through RAPD markers Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Passos,Leônidas Paixão; Machado,Marco Antonio; Vidigal,Maria Coletta; Campos,Ana Lúcia.
Elephantgrass pastures are limited by yield variations and reductions in forage quality and availability, thus making the search for genotypes with reduced seasonality a major concern. In order to verify the extent of genetic variability among contrasting cultivars, ten elephantgrass accessions were analyzed through DNA amplification by RAPD technique. A total of 160 DNA bands were generated with the use of 44 random primers and 23% of these bands were monomorphic for all accessions. Gel-obtained binary data (1 for presence and 0 for absence) were used for generating a genetic distance matrix, which was utilized in a UPGMA grouping analysis. Elephantgrass cultivars Cameroon and Vruckwona were the accessions mostly divergent from the others, with an average...

Ruminal parameters analyzed in remaining digestion residue of roughages in the in vitro/gas system Scientia Agricola
Campos,Fábio Prudêncio de; Sampaio,Alexandre Amstalden Moraes; Vieira,Paulo de Figueiredo; Bose,Max Lázaro Vieira; Sarmento,Patrícia.
Animal performance is the most direct measure in the evaluation of feed quality. However, performance data are often insufficient to determine possible interactions that may take place in the ruminal environment. The purpose of the present trial was to evaluate the possible associative effects on the concentrations of volatile fatty acids (VFAs), ammoniacal nitrogen (N-NH3) and pH in the remaining liquid fraction from the dry matter (DM) digestion for exclusive roughages: sugarcane (SC), 60- (EG60) and 180-day elephantgrass (EG180), and corn silage (SIL), as well as for combined roughages: sugarcane+corn silage (SCSIL), sugarcane+60-day elephantgrass (SCEG60), sugarcane+180-day elephantgrass (SCEG180), corn silage+60-day elephantgrass (SILEG60), corn...
